Tonight's "Food, Inc." Movie-Going MeetUp Experience

“ I liked the venue because the evening did not center around us eating food for a change. We chatted before & after the film. I got to meet Eileen again with her "Vegetable Mafia" T-shirt (you rock!), and Vivek, Al and David...all interesting guys with alot on their minds to save this world of meat-eaters from themselves (okay, that last part was me talking, they didn't actually say that). Jennifer was there as bubbly as ever, meeting, greeting, introducing people to each other and had the foresight to bring vegetarian info/recipes from COK to hand out afterwards.
The theatre was packed. There wasn't one seat left!
The film was so absorbing & fact-filled that sitting in the darkness, among so many like-minded people, became almost a nirvana of its own sort. As in the scene in "Close Encounters" where we are all waiting to see the aliens arrive at night in the mountains! We all know about the issues, only when the celluloid brings it all together,as though in a neat saran-wrapped package, we knew it is the real stuff. Say, what was in that popcorn?...I'm hallucinating. The bottom line-the film showed the detrimental impact on our health and planet brought on by the giant food companies. I make the analogy of that scene where we see a cow has a hole put in its side so a farmer can reach in and pull out the excess toxic, e-coli laden, fiberous material- to that of us over-consuming what Monsanto has put before us and doctors reaching in to pull out cancers, etc.
Go see this film! ”

Meet me at the Nikon Theatre at Jones Beach

And I will put into your hands the Christian Vegetarians Association booklet, "Are We Good Stewards of God's Creation?"

I'll be there with Jennifer and Camillo just outside the entrance during the Harvest 09 Christian Rock Conference to answer questions and distribute vegetarian/vegan information.

Post Event Info/Picture Update for you:

NY Long Island Harvest 09 w/Greg Laurie Saturday, June 13, 2009 Nikon Theater at Jones Beach, Long Island, NY
Jennifer:"Our first CVA leafleting! Camillo, Carl, and I met in the parking lot shortly after 6 for this event that was due to start at 7. To our surprise, hundreds of people were already in the theater. (So next time, it seems it would be good to aim for 2 hours before the event start time, at least for this kind of event.) There had been rain showers earlier, but happily no heavy downpours while we leafleted. Halfway through, Jennifer was approached by one security guard who told her we weren't supposed to be leafleting if we weren't with the groups performing at the venue--but after saying that, rather than insist we stop, he went on to express sympathy for our purpose, saying that last week at his own church they were doing this kind of thing, and had a function where they were serving some vegetarian bologna, and he asked for a bunch of the brochures to take back with him to the church! Then he said if anyone gave me any trouble, to tell them he said it was okay for us to be there. What a sweetheart. The only other noteworthy interaction was with another person handing out bookmarks promoting a series of summer Christian beach events. He seemed annoyed with what we were promoting. At one point, he was intercepting concertgoers before they reached Jennifer, and telling them, "Eat meat! Meat is good!" But that didn't last long. We had our smiles on, and continued our leafleting unperturbed. We handed out our three entire boxes of brochures by 7:30, so we won't be returning for the second night's performance. Next time, I would probably ask for 6 boxes (for each night)--at this venue at least, I'm sure a similar-sized crew could hand out twice what we did, starting an hour earlier.[Pictures coming--we took some shots of ourselves in action, wearing the CVA shirt!]Yours,Jennifer"

Soooo comforting to know this...

Following up on the cow that escaped death from the kosher knives at the Halal Musa Slaughterhouse yesterday...I give you this 2002 excerpt:

Slaughterhouse in the Bronx Follows Halal Rituals
Mar 26, 2002
The New York Times
On March 26, 2002, The New York Times featured an article on the Halal Musa Slaughterhouse in the South Bronx, NY. "Musa is one of several slaughter-on-demand butchers in the city, which can be found in the yellow pages under Live Poultry... Many of the customers are Muslim, and appreciate the fact that the slaughtering is carried out in accordance with Islamic dietary laws... The animals are slaughtered according to the rules of halal, which are similar to those that govern kosher slaughtering. Halal rules mandate that the animal to be eaten must be killed by a Muslim who pronounces the name of God during the slaughter."

UPDATE: Escapee cow, Molly, and new cow friend,Wexley, are getting along famously at the "Farrm" in Calverton Long Island. I hope to visit them soon! New owner,Connie Farr, is a vegetarian!

The "R U Ready 4 This" Vegan, Guerilla-style, Quick Protein... Dinner Recipe

Challenge: Can U do this in 5 minutes?: It works! I did it!

1 Package of White Wave Seitan-Cut it up, toss in fry pan with gravy ( 1 can Campbells Mushroom gravy...yes, it's freakin' vegan! Also add slowly 1 tablespoon Whole Wheat Flour and 1 teaspoon capers, 3 shakes Penzeys Shallot salt (what? you haven't Penzeys yet?!) ) , 4 shakes of McCormick Worcestershire Ground Black Pepper Blend (yes, it's vegan)-simmer

On the side- Do 1 head "bamboo-steamed" Cauliflower
1 sliced steamed Green pepper (yeah, toss it in with the kolly!)
In separate small pot-Heat 1 Can of Roland Bean Sprouts

That oughta do it. You'll know when it's all ready. Enjoy!
